Day by Day
Full Itinerary
Upon stepping outside the terminal at Tribhuvan International Airport, a representative from Desire Adventures will greet you and transfer you to your hotel via a private vehicle. Once you check in, you can spend the afternoon resting or exploring the local area at your leisure. In the afternoon, you will join your trekking guide and fellow travelers at our office for a pre-trip meeting. We will conduct a thorough briefing on the trail conditions, finalize your necessary gear and clothing, and answer any remaining logistical questions.
Insider Guide: Use the afternoon meeting to double-check your layering system with your guide. If you are missing high-quality trekking poles or a down jacket, Thamel has numerous reliable shops where you can purchase or rent equipment before leaving the capital.
Following an early breakfast at your hotel, we take a short 5-to-10-minute walk to the tourist bus station near Shorakhutte (Thamel). The bus departs promptly at 7:00 AM, embarking on a scenic journey along the Prithvi Highway. The route winds past the rushing Trishuli River, offering views of terraced farmlands, green hills, and local roadside settlements. By mid-afternoon, we arrive in the tranquil lakeside city of Pokhara. After checking into your hotel near Lakeside, you have the evening free to relax by Phewa Lake.
Insider Guide: Secure a seat on the right-hand side of the bus for the drive to Pokhara. On a clear day, this side offers the first distant glimpses of the Ganesh Himal and Manaslu ranges as you exit the Kathmandu valley.
After breakfast, our team boards a private jeep for a rugged 3-hour drive from Pokhara to the trailhead at Jhinu Danda. From here, our physical trek begins with a steady uphill climb up the valley ridge to the large Gurung village of Chhomrong. After navigating through the village, the trail drops down a long flight of stone steps to cross the Chhomrong Khola via a suspension bridge. The final stretch of the day requires a focused uphill push through bamboo forests to reach the settlement of Sinuwa.
Insider Guide: The stone stairs descending from Chhomrong can be demanding on unconditioned knees. Shorten your trekking poles slightly to help absorb your body weight and prevent joint fatigue early in the trek.
We depart Sinuwa after breakfast, beginning with a 1-hour climb to Upper Sinuwa. From there, the trail enters a dense, cool forest of oak, rhododendron, and bamboo. The path alternates between gradual sections and short descents before climbing steadily through the small trail outposts of Dovan and Himalaya. As we ascend closer to Deurali, the forest thins out, revealing views of the deep Modi Khola river gorge and the towering rock walls of the surrounding mountains.
Insider Guide: As you pass the Himalaya settlement and approach 3,000 meters, the air becomes noticeably cooler and thinner. Slow down your walking pace, maintain consistent hydration, and put on an extra layer before the afternoon cloud cover drops the valley temperature.
This is the most significant day of our journey. The trail climbs moderately from Deurali, tracing the Modi Khola riverbed upward into the open alpine zone. We walk for roughly three hours to reach Machhapuchhre Base Camp (MBC) at 3,700 meters. We will pause here for a warm tea break and vital altitude acclimatization. From MBC, the trail leaves the riverbed and climbs gradually for another two hours along the lateral moraine, leading us directly into the open, mountain-ringed plateau of Annapurna Base Camp.
Insider Guide: The segment between Deurali and MBC passes through a known avalanche valley. Your guide will assess the conditions and pace the group efficiently through this section. Keep your water bottle in an insulated sleeve today to prevent it from getting uncomfortably cold.
We wake before dawn to step outside and witness the sunrise over the Annapurna massifs. The morning light provides a panoramic view of Annapurna I, Annapurna South, Hiunchuli, and Machhapuchhre. After capturing the view, we return to the lodge for a warm breakfast. We then pack our gear and begin a long descent out of the sanctuary, retracing our steps down through MBC, Deurali, and Himalaya. The day concludes as we re-enter the thick bamboo forests and check into our lodge at Bamboo.
Insider Guide: While your lungs will welcome the thicker air as we drop nearly 2,000 meters, a long downhill day puts immense pressure on your quadriceps. Secure your boot laces tightly to prevent your toes from sliding forward and rubbing against the front of your shoes.
We depart Bamboo after breakfast, walking through the forest back to Sinuwa. From here, we descend to the riverbed and tackle a steep uphill climb on stone steps back to Chhomrong village. After a midday lunch break at Jhinu Danda, you have the option to visit the nearby natural riverside hot springs to soothe your muscles. Afterward, we cross one of the longest suspension bridges in the region to reach our waiting private jeep, which transfers us comfortably back to Pokhara for the night.
Insider Guide: Keep a small travel towel and a change of clothes accessible at the top of your daypack. If you choose to soak in the Jhinu hot springs after lunch, you can quickly dry off and change before boarding the jeep for the drive back to Pokhara.
At 7:30 AM, we board the tourist bus from the Pokhara bus park to return to the capital. The route retraces the Prithvi Highway, offering a final look at the rivers, hills, and rural towns of central Nepal. Upon arriving in Kathmandu, you will be transferred back to your hotel to freshen up or complete any last-minute souvenir shopping. In the evening, Desire Adventures hosts a special farewell dinner at a traditional restaurant, featuring a cultural performance to celebrate your successful journey.
Insider Guide: Thamel has excellent local markets for purchasing authentic tea, pashmina shawls, or handmade paper items. Ask your guide during the farewell dinner for recommendations on trusted shops that support local artisans at fair prices.
This marks the conclusion of your 9-day Himalayan journey. You can enjoy a relaxed morning breakfast at your hotel depending on your flight timeline. A representative from our team will meet you in the hotel lobby with a private vehicle to transfer you to the international terminal at Tribhuvan International Airport. We will assist with your luggage and ensure you arrive exactly three hours prior to your flight departure for a smooth check-in.

Food, Accommodation, and the Best Trekking Seasons
The 9-Day Annapurna Base Camp Trek balances active, daily physical challenge with classic mountain hospitality. Because this route passes through well-established local communities, the infrastructure offers reliable comfort and fresh mountain nutrition.
Accommodations on this trek consist of traditional, family-run mountain lodges, commonly known as tea houses. Bedrooms are rustic and functional, typically arranged as twin-sharing spaces with two single beds, foam mattresses, pillows, and clean blankets.
The heart of every tea house is the central dining hall. This space is heated in the evenings, making it the perfect spot to stay warm, relax, and socialize with fellow trekkers. And bathrooms are generally shared and can range from modern flush toilets to traditional squat facilities. Upgraded amenities like Wi-Fi, hot showers, and device charging are available at most lodges for a small extra fee.
Food and Hydration on the Trail:
Proper nutrition is vital for sustained energy during long hiking days. The tea house menus offer a surprising variety of fresh, carbohydrate-rich meals. Breakfast includes options like eggs, porridge, pancakes, and Tibetan bread. For lunch and dinner, menus feature international items like pasta, noodles, and vegetable soups, alongside the traditional Nepalese Dal Bhat (rice, lentil soup, and vegetable curry).
To support your physical health and recovery at higher elevations, Desire Adventures provides fresh seasonal fruits every evening after dinner.
Staying hydrated is critical to preventing altitude sickness. We provide medicated safe drinking water throughout the active trek, ensuring you have constant access to clean, treated water without risking stomach bugs.
Best Trekking Seasons:
Choosing the right time of year ensures clear mountain views and stable trail conditions. The Annapurna region has two primary trekking windows:
March to May: Spring Season for ABC trek
This is the absolute best season for nature lovers. The lower and mid-elevation trails between Jhinu, Chhomrong, and Sinuwa turn into vibrant, living walls of color. You will hike directly through massive, dense forests of blooming red, pink, and white rhododendrons, contrasted against deep green bamboo and clear white peaks.
Daytime temperatures in the lower valleys are comfortably warm, ranging from15°C to 20°C, making it perfect for hiking in a lightweight t-shirt. As you climb past Deurali and reach Annapurna Base Camp at 4,130 meters, evening temperatures drop significantly, sitting between 0°C and -5°C.
Mornings are typically crystal clear, offering unobstructed views of Machapuchare and Annapurna I. By early afternoon, rising thermal valleys can bring in light mist or clouds, creating a dramatic, atmospheric mountain setting before clearing up again after sunset.
September to December: Autumn Season for ABC Trek
Autumn is widely considered the gold standard for high-altitude trekking in Nepal. It offers the most reliable weather and sharpest mountain visibility of the entire year.
After the summer monsoon rains wash away all dust and pollution from the atmosphere, the air becomes incredibly crisp and fresh. The landscapes are lush and deep green at lower elevations, transitioning to clean, dry golden alpine terrain as you ascend.
Autumn provides highly stable, predictable weather patterns with virtually no rain. Days are bright, sunny, and clear. Lower valley daytime temperatures hover around 12°C to 18°C. However, because the air is completely clear, heat escapes quickly at night. At Annapurna Base Camp, late-autumn winter nights can plunge down between -5°C and -10°C, requiring heavy thermal layers and a quality sleeping bag.
You can expect nearly 100% visibility from morning until night during October and November. This makes it the absolute premium choice for photographers and trekkers who want to guarantee unobstructed, fiery sunrises over the entire Annapurna amphitheater.
The Off-Peak Seasons:
While spring and autumn are preferred, understanding the off-seasons helps clarify why our main departures focus on the peak months:
- Monsoon or Summer (June to August): This season brings heavy rainfall, high humidity, and dense cloud cover across the Annapurna range. While the valleys are incredibly green and agricultural life is active, the mountain peaks are hidden by clouds most of the day. The trails can also become slippery, muddy, and prone to leeches.
- Winter (January to February): Winter brings deep blue skies and completely empty trails, but the extreme cold and heavy high-altitude snowfall present real challenges. Temperatures at Base Camp can drop below -15°C (5°F), and the trail segment between Deurali and MBC can occasionally close due to increased avalanche risks in the narrow rock gorges.

Common Questions
Frequently Asked
The entire round-trip journey starting from and returning to Pokhara covers approximately 115 kilometers (71 miles). Over the active trekking days, you will be walking between 5 to 7 hours per day. The trail starts in the subtropical valley floor and gradually ascends along the Modi Khola river gorge, moving at an intentional, rhythmic pace to ensure your body adjusts comfortably to the changing landscapes.
Yes, this trek is highly popular among beginners. It is classified as moderately challenging, meaning it is ideal for anyone with a basic, healthy level of physical fitness. Because the maximum altitude reaches 4,130 meters (13,546 feet), it is significantly less demanding on your lungs and cardiovascular system than the Everest Base Camp trek. While prior hiking experience is helpful due to the steady uphill stone steps, beginners can absolutely complete this trek successfully with proper preparation.
The terrain is incredibly diverse. You will begin by walking on dirt paths and stone trails through rural villages and terraced farmlands. As you enter the forest, you will encounter sections with steep, hand-carved stone staircases—particularly the famous descent and climb around Chhomrong village. Once you pass Deurali, the trail opens up into a rocky, high-alpine glacial valley. The walking requires focus and steady balance, but it does not require any technical climbing skills, ropes, or ice axes.
The best way to prepare is to build your cardiovascular endurance and leg strength 6 to 8 weeks before your trip. We recommend regular aerobic exercises like swimming, cycling, or running for 45 minutes, three times a week. To prepare your leg muscles for the mountain stairs, practice walking on local hilly trails with a weighted daypack, or use the stairmaster and incline treadmill at your local gym. Focus on consistency rather than speed.
On the trail, you will stay in classic, family-run mountain lodges known as teahouses. The bedrooms are rustic, clean, and functional, typically set up as twin-sharing spaces with two single beds, foam mattresses, pillows, and blankets. The center of social life is the main dining hall, which is warmed by a central stove every evening. It’s the perfect place to dry your gear, sip hot tea, and swap stories with travelers from around the world.
You should never drink untreated tap water or river water in the mountains, as your digestive system is not accustomed to the local bacteria. To keep you completely safe and healthy, Desire Adventures provides medicated, proven safe drinking water throughout the entire trek. Your guide will ensure you have access to clean water daily. We recommend drinking 3 to 4 liters of fluids per day to combat dehydration and help your body acclimate to the higher altitude.
The teahouses offer a surprisingly wide range of fresh, high-energy food. Breakfast features items like eggs cooked to order, porridge, pancakes, toast, and hot tea. Lunches and dinners include international dishes like pasta, stir-fried noodles, and soups, alongside the traditional Nepalese Dal Bhat (steamed rice, lentil soup, and vegetable curry). If you are vegetarian, vegan, gluten-free, or have specific food allergies, our guides coordinate directly with the lodge kitchens every morning to customize your meals safely.
Our guides are government-licensed professionals thoroughly trained in wilderness first aid and altitude safety. Because our itinerary climbs gradually and includes built-in pacing, severe altitude sickness is less common on this route. However, we monitor your health daily. If you experience mild symptoms like a slight headache, we will slow down, increase your hydration, or rest. If symptoms worsen, safety is our absolute priority; your guide will safely lead you down to a lower elevation. In rare, severe emergencies, our Kathmandu office will coordinate a rapid helicopter evacuation.
Our professional porter team handles the heavy lifting, carrying your main duffle bag (up to our standard weight limit) from lodge to lodge. Your main bag will be waiting for you inside your bedroom every evening. You only need to carry a lightweight 30-to-40-liter daypack containing things you might need during the day's walk. This includes your passport, cash, camera, sunglasses, sunblock, an extra warm fleece layer, a waterproof rain jacket, your water bottle, and any personal medication.
Absolutely. If you are traveling alone, we highly recommend joining one of our existing scheduled group departures. This is an incredibly cost-effective and social way to experience the Himalayas, allowing you to share the adventure with like-minded travelers. If you are booking as an independent group of friends, family, or trekking partners, we offer special group discounts depending on your party size. Contact our team to secure the best available rate for your departure date!
