Long before he was a founder, Navaraj Thapa Magar was a boy in a small, sun-drenched village in Dhading. He grew up in the shadow of the mountains, where the air was thin but the dreams were vast. Life in the village was simple, yet it forged a spirit as resilient as the rhododendrons that bloom against the Nepalese winds.
Driven by a quiet ambition, Navaraj eventually left the familiar hills of Dhading for the chaotic, dusty streets of Kathmandu. Like many who seek a better future, his journey began in the hardest way possible. He didn’t start at the top; he started at the very bottom of the trail—as a porter.
The Weight of Experience
For years, Navaraj carried the heavy loads of travelers on his back. He felt the sting of the cold at 5,000 meters and knew the exhaustion of a ten-hour ascent. But with every step, he was learning. He wasn’t just carrying bags; he was observing the mountains, the weather, and most importantly, the people.
He transitioned from a porter to a guide, a role he held for decades. As a guide, Navaraj became a bridge between two worlds. He translated the silence of the peaks for guests from across the globe, ensuring their safety and sharing the soul of Nepal. He saw what made a trip “good” and what made it “unforgettable.”
A New Start: Desire Adventure
After twenty years of walking the trails, Navaraj decided it was time to build something of his own. Desire Adventure was born from a simple philosophy: Trekking should be more than a vacation; it should be a transformation.
This is a “new start,” but it is backed by decades of old wisdom. Navaraj has seen the tourism industry evolve, and through Desire Adventure, he aims to lead it toward a more heart-centered future.
His Vision for Change:
- The Porter’s Dignity: Having carried the load himself, Navaraj is a fierce advocate for the fair treatment, insurance, and empowerment of porters and field staff.
- Authenticity Over Commercialism: He wants to move away from “mass tourism” and return to authentic, local experiences where guests connect deeply with the culture of the villages, not just the summit of the mountains.
- Sustainability: Ensuring that the trails he loves remain pristine for the next generation of trekkers.
A Note from the Founder
“I have spent my life in these mountains—first out of necessity, then out of love. I know what it’s like to struggle, and I know what it’s like to stand on top of the world. With Desire Adventure, I don’t just want to show you the mountains; I want to show you the heart of my home.” — Navaraj Thapa Magar
Desire Adventure is more than a name. It is the culmination of a journey that began in the terraced fields of Dhading and has finally found its home at the helm of a company built on integrity, experience, and the true spirit of Nepal.
