You will be whisked away in a private vehicle directly to your Tourist Star Standard Hotel. In the afternoon, join us at our office for an unhurried, comprehensive trip briefing to meet your expert guide and fellow travelers.

Day 01: Arrival in Kathmandu and Transfer to Hotel
2

We optimize your peak-season logistics by organizing comfortable, private or group vehicle transfers to Ramechhap. This strategy avoids major Kathmandu airport delays. Once in Lukla, we introduce you to your private porter team while you enjoy a warm breakfast. Upon arriving in Phakding, you will check into a premium lodge featuring a private attached bathroom and hot shower to wash away your travel fatigue. Enjoy fresh, organic seasonal fruits right after your dinner.

A 1–2 AM departure for the drive to Ramechhap, followed by a thrilling flight and an initial descent into the Dudh Koshi Valley.. During the flight to Lukla, try to sit on the left side of the aircraft.

Day 02: Drive to Ramechhap, Fly to Lukla (2,860m) and Trek to Phakding
3

The Day's Challenge: A 6–7 hour trek involving multiple suspension bridge crossings and a sustained, steep switchback climb up to Namche.

Your licensed guide paces the steep sections perfectly to protect your energy and stamina. Furthermore, stay fully hydrated with our unlimited eco-purified drinking water provided throughout the day. At Namche, we check you into a high-quality lodge, securing a room with a private attached bathroom and hot shower for your entire stay.

When crossing the high Larja Bridge, put your smartphone or camera strap securely around your wrist. The wind funneling through the gorge can be incredibly sudden and strong.

Day 03: Trek from Phakding to Namche Bazaar
4

The Day's Challenge: A 3–4 hour hike above 3,600 meters to actively stimulate your body's adaptation before sleeping low.

Enjoy an ambitious, picturesque circuit through Shyangboche, Khunde, and Khumjung village. You will visit the historic Hillary School and view a real Yeti skull at the local monastery. Your guide will perform your daily pulse oximeter safety check during the hike. Afterward, spend your afternoon exploring the cafes, bakeries, and shops of Namche Bazaar at your own leisure.

Insider Guide Tip: When visiting the Khumjung Monastery to view the Yeti skull, it is customary to leave a small donation in the box. Remember to always walk clockwise around the chortens and Mani walls on the trail.

Day 04: Premium Acclimatization Day in Namche Bazaar
5

The Day's Challenge: A 5–6 hour trek dropping into a deep valley floor before a demanding, dusty forest climb to Tengboche.

Take in clear views of Ama Dablam and Everest. In the evening, your guide escorts you inside the famous Tengboche Monastery to observe the peaceful, authentic evening prayers of the resident monks.

Insider Guide Tip: The climb from Phunki Tenga to Tengboche is dusty and exposed to the sun. Wear a lightweight buff over your mouth and nose to prevent the infamous "Khumbu cough" caused by inhaling dry, dusty mountain air.

Day 05: Trek from Namche Bazaar to Tengboche
6

The morning begins with a gentle descent from the Tengboche ridge through a beautiful forest of conifers and rhododendrons. You will pass through the quiet settlements of Deboche and Milingo before crossing a suspension bridge at Chaturje over the roaring Imja River. On the other side, a large stone chorten welcomes you.

From here, the trail turns north and begins a gradual, steady ascent into the alpine zone. You will pass the traditional stone walls of Pangboche, Somare, and Orsho. After crossing another bridge at Chuto, you will climb along the bank of the Imja River for about thirty minutes until the wide valley opens up to reveal the settlement of Dingboche.

Insider Guide Tip: The stretch past Somare is highly exposed to biting valley winds. Keep your windproof shell jacket in your daypack so you can put it on quickly before your body cools down during trail breaks.

Day 06: Trek from Tengboche to Dingboche
7

This day is entirely dedicated to safe altitude adaptation. After a warm breakfast, you will head out with your private guide for an acclimatization hike. You have two excellent options based on how your body feels:

Short Option: A steep, one-hour hike up the northern ridge to Nangkar Tshang Gompa. Here, you will explore ancient meditation retreats built around the cave of Sange Dorje, surrounded by prayer flags. Afterward, you will climb to a panoramic viewpoint above the monastery.

Long Option: A longer hike further up the upper Imja Valley floor to the settlement of Chhukung, followed by a climb up Chhukung RI to actively train your lungs for the thinning air.

Insider Guide Tip: If you choose the Nangkar Tshang ridge hike, look back to the south. You will get a rare, spectacular view of the massive Makalu (the world's 5th highest mountain) peaking over the valley wall.

Day 07: Acclimatization in Dingboche
8

Leaving Dingboche, the journey continues with a slow, steady climb along a high alpine ridge. You will pass the small settlement of Dusa before dropping down to cross a rushing glacial stream. This brings you to the small cluster of tea houses at Dughla, where we stop to rest. From Dughla, you will tackle the demanding, steep climb directly up the rough terminal moraine of the massive Khumbu Glacier.

At the top of this ridge, you will enter a solemn area filled with stone monuments dedicated to lost climbers and Sherpas. Emerging from this pass, you will enjoy soaring views of Pumori before navigating a final, challenging stretch over loose, rocky terrain to reach the high settlement of Lobuche.

Insider Guide Tip: Take a quiet moment at the top of the Thukla Pass to read the inscriptions on the stone monuments. This is a deeply moving site dedicated to legendary adventurers like Scott Fischer and experienced local mountain guides.

Day 08: Trek from Dingboche to Lobuche
9

You will start your morning on a rocky, demanding trail squeezed tightly between the lateral moraine of the Khumbu Glacier and the towering mountain walls. After a few short, vertical climbs, you will reach the Lobuche Pass. From here, you will navigate an undulating 45-minute path across the rough terminal moraine of the Changri Shar Glacier to reach Gorak Shep, nestled beneath Kala Patthar.

After a quick stop, you will follow the new moraine route toward the ultimate destination. The trail winds over glacial debris until you see the colorful prayer flags wedged between the rocks, marking your arrival at Everest Base Camp, directly beneath the rumbling Khumbu Icefall. After celebrating, you will retrace your steps over the moraine back to Gorak Shep.

Insider Guide Tip: The final ridge leading into Everest Base Camp is notoriously slippery with hidden black ice under the dirt. Put on your microspikes if your guide recommends them to maintain an easy, confident stride.

Day 09: Trek to Gorak Shep – Everest Base Camp (5,364m / 17,598ft) and return to Gorak Shep (5,140m / 16,863ft)
10

To capture the ultimate view of Mount Everest, your day begins two hours before dawn with a steep, sub-zero hike up the switchbacks of Kala Patthar. As the first light breaks, the sun reveals Everest, Pumori, Nuptse, and Lhotse, while offering a bird's-eye view of the Khumbu Glacier below.

After descending to Gorak Shep for breakfast, you will retrace your steps past Lobuche. From there, you will leave the busy main highway, turning right at the trail junction. The path winds around the edge of a scenic ridge, offering distant views of ancient stupas and the beautiful waters of Cholatse Tsho lake as you enter a peaceful side valley to reach the quiet village of Dzongla.

Insider Guide Tip: Batteries drain incredibly fast in the sub-zero morning cold on Kala Patthar. Keep your camera batteries, phone, and extra power banks inside your inner jacket pocket close to your body heat until the exact moment you need to take a photo.

Day 10: Hike to Kala Patthar and Trek to Dzongla
11

Your journey begins at the crack of dawn to ensure a safe crossing before midday mountain winds arrive. Leaving Dzongla, the trail rolls over a grassy crest to a flat valley floor before reaching a steep cliff face. You will climb a rocky path to the edge of the moraine, where you will step onto the glacier. Following a crisp, slippery path across the snowfield, you will complete a final steep hike up a rocky slope to reach the summit of the Cho La Pass (5,420m).

After taking in views of Ama Dablam and the Ngozumpa Glacier, you will descend a steep, zigzagging trail of rock and loose scree, guided by stone cairns, to reach the base of the cliff. From there, you will navigate a rough terrain of boulders, climb a high ridge, and walk for another hour and a half through a desolate landscape to reach Thaknak.

Insider Guide Tip: Do not use trekking poles on the steep, rocky scramble leading up to the pass; pack them away. Keeping your hands completely free allows you to safely hold onto the rock grips and maintain a balanced center of gravity.

Day 11: Trek to Thaknak via Cho La Pass 5420m
12

After breakfast in Thaknak, the trail paths lead between the lateral moraine and the mountain wall, bringing you to a frozen lake at the edge of the Ngozumpa Glacier. You will descend into the inner side of the moraine to cross this massive glacier.

The route across the ice involves navigating ever-changing slopes of rock and scree. Upon climbing out on the opposite side, you will enter the pristine village of Gokyo, beautifully located on the eastern shore of the third lake, Gokyo Tsho.

After lunch, you will cross the stream at the northern end of the village and begin a steady, two-hour zig-zag climb to the summit of Gokyo Ri (5,360m) for an unparalleled view of Cho Oyu, Everest, Lhotse, and Makalu before descending back to the lakeside.

Insider Guide Tip: The late afternoon light from the top of Gokyo Ri offers the absolute best conditions for photography. The sun hits the face of Mount Everest and reflects perfectly off the jade-green waters of the lakes below.

Day 12: Trek to Gokyo and Climb to Gokyo Ri (5,360m)
13

After enjoying a full breakfast in Gokyo, you will bid farewell to the lakes. The trail begins with a shallow incline passing the second lake, Taujung Tsho, and continues over lichen-covered boulder fields to the first lake, Longponga Tsho. Leaving the lakes behind, the path enters a rocky cleft and drops down steep stone steps to the village of Phangga, located at the very snout of the Ngozumpa Glacier.

From Phangga, you will follow the scenic ridge to a cluster of hilltop chortens. A steep descent down a scrubby slope brings you into Machhermo. The trail then leads out of Machhermo, crossing small sand dunes to reach Luza. From Luza, you will gently descend past a large chorten to Lhabarma, and continue down hillsides covered in tundra grasses and scrub juniper to reach the village of Dole, located right at the opening of the Phule River.

Insider Guide Tip: This long descent can be tough on your toes. Before leaving Gokyo, make sure your toenails are trimmed short and lace your trekking boots tightly around the ankle to prevent your feet from sliding forward.

14

Enjoy your breakfast in Dole before hitting the trail. The path continues past traditional stone houses, a series of beautiful waterfalls, and massive boulders on a narrow trail leading to Tongba. From here, you will enter a lush forest of pine and rhododendron as you drop down to Phortse Thanga.

After crossing the river, you will face a steep, 1.5-hour switchback ascent through the forest to reach a historic stupa. This spot marks the birthplace of Lama Sange Dorje, the saint who originally introduced Buddhism to the Khumbu region. From the stupa, you will head toward the high ridge of Mong La. Outlining the ridge, you will descend to the familiar trail junction at Sanasa. Take in the spectacular views of Tengboche and Ama Dablam before walking the final, level path via Chhorkung back into the vibrant hub of Namche Bazaar.

Insider Guide Tip: The hillside around Sanasa is a prime habitat for the Himalayan Tahr (wild mountain goat) and the colorful Danphe (Nepal's national bird). Keep your camera accessible and look closely at the cliffsides.

15

Leaving the amphitheater of Namche Bazaar after breakfast, you will retrace your steps to Mislung on a comfortable, flat trail. The path then plunges into the pine forests on a steeply descending zigzag path down to the high suspension bridge floating above the Dudh Koshi River. Once across the bridge, you will walk along a level gravel and boulder path to Jorsale, then rise slightly to the national park exit gate at Monjo.

After completing the check-out formalities, you will continue your descent, crossing several suspension bridges past Benkar and Toktok to reach Phakding. From Phakding, the trail transitions into a gradual, final uphill climb past several traditional Sherpa villages, ultimately bringing you back through the Pasang Lhamo Memorial Gate into Lukla.

Insider Guide Tip: The final 3 hours from Phakding up to Lukla is an uphill climb when your body is already tired. Save a high-energy snack or a glucose bar specifically for Phakding to give you a final boost of stamina.

16

After an early breakfast in Lukla, you will head to the Tenzing-Hillary Airport. You will board your short, scenic flight back to the Ramechhap airstrip at Manthali. Upon landing, a vehicle will be waiting to transfer you directly on the 4-to-5-hour drive back to your hotel in Kathmandu. After checking in, you will have the rest of the afternoon completely at leisure to rest, shower, or do some last-minute souvenir shopping. In the evening, the entire team will gather for a premium farewell dinner hosted by Desire Adventure.

17

Your complete 17-day Himalayan circuit comes to an end today. After enjoying breakfast at your hotel, you can spend your remaining hours packing or relaxing. According to your specific international flight schedule, our team will coordinate your pick-up and transfer you directly to the Tribhuvan International Airport.

Insider Guide Tip: Plan to leave your hotel for the airport exactly three hours prior to your international flight time. Kathmandu airport security lines can be unpredictable, and this ensures a completely stress-free departure.

Understanding Your Lukla Flights: Kathmandu vs. Ramechhap

To ensure complete transparency, Desire Adventure provides direct flights from Kathmandu during the shoulder seasons (June to September and December to March). Nevertheless, during the peak trekking seasons of Spring (April to May) and Autumn (October to November), the Civil Aviation Authority of Nepal reroutes all Lukla flights through Ramechhap Airport.

gokyo-lake-wide-view

We utilize Ramechhap during these peak windows for two crucial reasons:

  • Drastically Reduced Delays: Air traffic congestion at Kathmandu’s international airport often causes massive flight backlogs. Ramechhap provides a shorter, more reliable flight path into Lukla.
  • Weather Windows: Mountain weather shifts rapidly. Because Ramechhap is physically closer to Lukla, planes can easily take advantage of tiny, clear weather windows that Kathmandu flights would completely miss.

The Desire Adventure Comfort: We handle this logistical shift entirely by providing comfortable, private vehicles or shared minivans to transport you smoothly from Kathmandu to Ramechhap.

Why Gokyo Chola Pass Trekking via EBC?

This alpine circuit is classified as a strenuous and highly challenging trek. Therefore, it is ideally suited for regular hikers, fitness enthusiasts, or individuals with prior high-altitude experience. Because the route involves navigating steep moraines and crossing a glaciated pass above 5,000 meters, physical preparation is absolutely essential.

Fortunately, our unhurried pacing makes this formidable challenge entirely achievable for determined adventurers. If you possess strong endurance and a deep desire to explore pristine, uncrowded mountain valleys, this trek will reward you with memories that last a lifetime.

Preparing for the Gokyo Cho La Pass via EBC Trek

during-everest-gokyo-chola-trek

Because this 17-day journey keeps you above 4,000 meters for several consecutive days, proper preparation is the absolute key to a safe and successful summit. We can break your preparation strategy down into three vital pillars:

  1. Cardiovascular & Strength Conditioning: Building the stamina to walk 5–8 hours daily with a weighted daypack.
  2. Altitude & Acclimatization Strategy: Understanding how your body adapts to thinning air and recognizing early health signals.
  3. Technical Gear & Layering: Packing the correct three-layer clothing system and essential safety equipment for glaciated terrain.

Let's dive into Cardiovascular & Lung Conditioning

Building your aerobic capacity is the single most important factor for a successful trek. As you ascend past 4,000 meters, each breath contains significantly fewer oxygen molecules than at sea level. Without proper training, your heart and lungs will struggle to keep up, leading to rapid fatigue.

To prepare your cardiorespiratory system, we focus on progressive aerobic training:

Month 1:

Build a baseline aerobic habit (30–45 mins per session).

Target Activities: Brisk walking, light cycling, swimming

Frequency: 3 Days/Week

Month 2:

Increase intensity and duration (45–60 mins per session).'

Target Activities: Jogging, road cycling, stairmaster

Frequency: 4 days/week

Month 3:

Simulate real trail multi-hour endurance

Target Activities: Trail hiking with a pack, steep incline treadmill

Frequency: 4–5 days/week

Long, slow, steady cardio sessions are much better preparation because they train your body's aerobic energy system.

When you are trekking for 6 to 8 hours a day in the Khumbu region, your body relies on a constant, steady supply of oxygen to keep your muscles moving over long distances. High-intensity interval sprints (like HIIT) primarily train your anaerobic system, which is built for short, explosive bursts of power rather than sustained endurance.

Frequently Asked

The Cho La Pass is a strenuous alpine crossing that requires strong physical fitness and trekking experience. However, it is a trekking pass, meaning you do not need technical climbing gear like ropes, ice axes, or harnesses. Desire Adventure provides microspikes for your boots if the trail is icy. Furthermore, our elite local guides inspect the route daily to ensure your absolute safety during the traverse.

Your health is our ultimate priority. Our guides conduct vital pulse oximetry checks every single evening to monitor your oxygen saturation levels. If you show early symptoms of Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS), your guide will immediately stop your ascent or guide you to a lower altitude. Additionally, Desire Adventure provides free emergency coordination for helicopter evacuations if a swift medical descent becomes necessary.

During the peak trekking seasons of Spring and Autumn, the Civil Aviation Authority of Nepal reroutes Lukla flights to Ramechhap Airport to reduce air traffic congestion in Kathmandu. Because Ramechhap is physically closer to Lukla, flights are less likely to face long weather delays. Desire Adventure eliminates all travel hassle by providing comfortable, private or group vehicle transfers directly from Kathmandu to the Ramechhap terminal.

We never compromise on your nutritional health. We provide fresh, hygienic full-board meals at hand-picked lodges, capped off with organic seasonal fruits every evening after dinner. For hydration, we supply unlimited eco-purified drinking water throughout the trail. Consequently, you save money and protect your health by avoiding risky, unpurified trail water.
